OpenAI recently introduced "Canvas," a groundbreaking feature within its widely popular ChatGPT platform, making AI more useful and accessible
OpenAI Unveils Canvas
OpenAI has introduced Canvas, a new interface powered by its GPT 4o model, which uses technology such as generative AI to assist users working on writing and coding projects.
As of now, it is available in its beta form. However, once it is out of the beta stage, OpenAI has a plan to roll out Canvas to all ChatGPT-free users.
ChatGPT Canvas: What it is and how does it work
According to OpenAI, Canvas is a new interface working with ChatGPT on writing and coding projects that go beyond simple chat.
The interface is user-friendly and adds ease in building complex projects. In fact, Canvas opens automatically when ChatGPT detects a scenario in which it could be helpful. Users can also include “use canvas” in their prompt to open Canvas and use it to work on an existing project.
In addition to easy access, the ChatGPT Canvas feature allows users to have greater control over their projects by providing the ability to edit text or code.
"With Canvas, you can directly edit text or code. There’s a menu of shortcuts for you to ask ChatGPT to adjust writing length, debug your code, and quickly perform other useful actions. You can also restore previous versions of your work by using the back button in Canvas,” stated the blog post.
Writing shortcuts include:
Suggest edit: ChatGPT offers inline suggestions and feedback.
Adjust the length: Edits the document length to be shorter or longer.
Change reading level: Adjust the reading level from kindergarten to graduate school.
Add final polish: Check for grammar, clarity, and consistency.
Add emojis: Add relevant emojis for emphasis and colour.
Coding shortcuts include:
Review code: ChatGPT provides inline suggestions to improve your code.
Add logs: Inserts print statements to help you debug and understand your code.
Add comments: Add comments to the code to make it easier to understand.
Fix bugs: Detects and rewrites problematic code to resolve errors.
Port to a language: Translates your code into JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP.
What's next
In today's digital-driven era, making AI more useful and accessible requires rethinking how we interact with it. Thus, Canvas is a new approach and the first major ChatGPT update since its launch.
Though Canvas is still in early beta, OpenAI is planning to improve rapidly with its capabilities.
